Choosing canvas over svg and content editable March 22, 2010

The rich text editing component of knowtu’s editor after much deliberation is written in canvas. Why? Well the fundamental reason is control. Canvas gives you a low level of control and feels closer to javascript. Working with SVG is a bit more cumbersome and has a new DOM to boot. Content editable just isn’t there yet for the level of control the component needs, with overlays, rich components (eg embedded table editor, form controls … ) isn’t as nice. This rapidly changes though so I suspect in a year the decision will be different, but shipping wins.

Accessibility was my main holdup, but I’ve decided to go with a rendered content approach which should allow accessible navigation.
